I am 22 and black. Most of the men and women on my mother and father’s side suffer from diabetes, hypertension and/or heart disease, and those that don’t are on the verge of contracting these killers that plague the african american community, more than any other community in this country.

Well since I know this and I am also at high risk because all three run in my family, and I gain weight in my midsection easily, I want to do something about it.
My boyfriend and I live together and he too has a family history of these diseases.

Well I want us to start eating healthier and I was wondering, If I cooked from diabetic cook books and prepared low sodium meals, along with exercise will this help?…Will this be enough?…Will we lose weight?
(also I am hoping by learning how to prepare good food, in a healthy manor, maybe I can help some of my family members out)

And please don’t refer me to a doctor, because l, like many other Americans I also don’t have a tap of insurance!
THANX IN ADVANCE!!!!
